CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE GOVERNMENT KIND by W. Todd Zechel

Unfortunately, over the years the subject of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) has often been discredited by
controversy, government pronouncements, and wild tales and charges.
Yet, documents released under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act
confirm that it was American military forces which often had the wildest
close encounters with UFOs, and that the evidence indicates--in the
words of one high-ranking USAF General--"the phenomenon reported
is something real and not visionary or fictitious."
For example, FOIA-released documents reveal that in the fall of 1975
UFOs repeatedly buzzed and hovered over Strategic Air Command (SAC)
B-52 bases and missiles sites from Maine to Montana. At Loring Air Force
Base, Maine, in late October 1975 UFOs characterized as "unknown
entities" buzzed the B-52 bomber base three nights in a row, hovering
within 100 feet of the nuclear weapons storage area. Air Force messages
called the UFO pilot "a smart and most capable aviator," and concluded there was "a clear intent" toward the
nuclear weapons.
Other documents disclosed that on Oct. 31, 1975, two UFOs buzzed Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Michigan, and were
pursued by a [waiting in anticipation of a UFO threat] USAF KC-135 Orbital Command Post out over Lake Huron,
whereupon the UFOs hovered close to the water surface and extinguished their lights, thereby evading further
radar or visual detection.
In the following days, out west in November UFOs buzzed missile sites in North Dakota and Montana, hovering, in
one instance at least, within ten feet of a missile silo, and were chased by NORAD air defense F-106 interceptors,
which had been scrambled to deal with the UFO threat. The UFOs' evasive tactics were observed by ground-based
Sabotage Alert Teams (soldiers who guard the missile sites),  watching warily through field glasses as the UFOs
eluded the interceptors by hovering close to the mountains and dousing their lights.
It is likely, however, none of these incredible UFO reports--which included a NORAD Command Director's Log that
had dozens of UFO encounters with USAF forces logged during a two-week period in late October/early November
1975--would have ever seen the light of day had it not been for a concerned intelligence analyst turned whistle
blower who leaked some of the documents to a civilian UFO group, formerly an anti-government secrecy
powerhouse[NICAP], and it was only through a fortunate chain of circumstances that the author came to see the
documents and secretly copy down their date-time groups and the make requests for them under the Freedom of
Information Act (FOIA), citing the DTG's, which led to their ultimate release. In fact, one of the documents ultimately
released by the Secretary of the Air Force Office of Information (SAFOI), which sets policies on what and how much
should be told to the press and public, clearly shows USAF officials conspired to prevent the press and public from
learning any details of the disturbing chain of incidents--known as a "UFO flap."
