The UFO Flap That Killed Project Blue Book

In November 1957 another nationwide UFO sighting wave [flap]
shook the nation. No doubt the launching of the second Sputnik
satellite by the Soviet Union drew people's attention to the sky,
causing a sharp increase in UFO reports, as untrained observers
suddenly saw lights in the night sky they'd never seen before.
However, what took place in Levelland, Texas, in early November
seems to had nothing to do with Sputnik, and when it was all over the
U.S. Air Force [USAF] had lost control of the collection and analysis
of UFO-related intelligence.
The events began at 11:00 P.M. on November 2, 1957. Two men
driving just north of Levelland saw a glowing yellow and white torpedo
-shaped UFO flying toward them after it rose up out of field. As it
buzzed over their truck, the motor and lights went dead. The driver, a farmhand named Pedro Saucedo, described
what happened next: "I jumped out and hit the deck as the thing passed directly over the truck with a great sound
and rush of wind. It sounded like thunder, and my truck rocked from the blast. I felt a lot of heat."
About an hour later, Jim Wheeler, driving about four miles east of own, came upon a huge 200-foot, egg-shaped
object sitting in the road, its brilliant glow illuminating the area. As he approached the giant landed UFO, his vehicle
lights and engine suddenly died. Wheeler started to get out, but the massive UFO bolted off into the sky, and as it
did the object's lights went out. At that same moment, Wheeler's car lights came back on!
Around the same time, Newell Wright was driving toward Levelland from the east. All of a sudden his car's ammeter
went crazy, the needle jumping wildly, then the motor died and his lights went out. Puzzled, Wright got out to check
under his hood. He found nothing...but as he turned around HE SAW IT FOR THE FIRST TIME....A LARGE
SAUCER SITTING ON THE ROAD AHEAD...100 FEET LONG, GLOWING BLUISH-GREEN! Scared out of his wits,
Wright jumped back into his car and tried to start it. ERRRRR...ERRRRRR...ERRRRRRR...Nothing! Frightened,
apprehensive and feeling uterly helpless, Wright sat there for several minutes until finally the UFO rose up off the
road and quickly disappeared from sight. Instantly, his car started up without a moment's hesitation.
A few minutes later, Frank Williams encountered a large object on the road about ten miles north of Levelland. His
motor and headlights suddenly went dead, just like the others. Strangely, the glow of the landed UFO pulsed on and
off, steadily, and Williams' headlights pulsed off and on, too, in the exact opposite sequence. So when the UFO
pulsed on, Williams' lights went out, and when the UFO went dark, Williams' lights came to life. Williams trembled
with fear as some un-Earthly force took control of his car. Finally, the saucer took off with a thunderous roar, and
once again Williams' car functioned normally.
In all, at least ten separate witnesses, including Sheriff's Deputies and a fire marshall, reported similar sightings of
giant UFOs and auto malfunctions. All witnesses reported a light, misting rain, but no storms or lightning.
An Air Force Intelligence officer, dispatched to the scene by Air Force Project Blue Book, the USAF's small UFO
investigating group at Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio, spoke with a few witnesses, then later erroneously
claimed lightning had been in the area at the time of the incidents, in spite of all the witness testimony and weather
reports to the contrary.
The Air Force's final evaluation of the Levelland flap attributed the UFO encounters to "weather phenomenon (sic)
of electrical nature, generally classified as 'Ball Lightning' or 'St. Elmo's Fire' " Accordingly, the engine and headlight
failures were caused by "wet electrical circuit," said the Blue Book.
Levelland citizens were outraged by the USAF's ridiculous dismissal of the bizarre UFO encounters and they
passed their anger onto powerful U.S. Senator (D-Tex.) Lyndon Johnson, chairman of the Senate Armed Services
Committee. Fed up with Project Blue Book's public blunders, Johnson, behind the scenes, requested the CIA to
conduct a secret investigation of UFOs without the Air Force finding out. According to information provided in
confidence to the author by the late Dr. Herbert "Pete" Scoville, then director of Scientific Intelligence for the CIA,
and confirmed by Lt. Col. (USAF) Robert Friend, subsequently appointed head of the now power-less Project Blue

The UFO Flap That Killed Project Blue Book

In November 1957 another nationwide UFO sighting wave [flap]
shook the nation. No doubt the launching of the second Sputnik
satellite by the Soviet Union drew people's attention to the sky,
causing a sharp increase in UFO reports, as untrained observers
suddenly saw lights in the night sky they'd never seen before.
However, what took place in Levelland, Texas, in early November
seems to had nothing to do with Sputnik, and when it was all over the
U.S. Air Force [USAF] had lost control of the collection and analysis
of UFO-related intelligence.
The events began at 11:00 P.M. on November 2, 1957. Two men
driving just north of Levelland saw a glowing yellow and white torpedo
-shaped UFO flying toward them after it rose up out of field. As it
buzzed over their truck, the motor and lights went dead. The driver, a farmhand named Pedro Saucedo, described
what happened next: "I jumped out and hit the deck as the thing passed directly over the truck with a great sound
and rush of wind. It sounded like thunder, and my truck rocked from the blast. I felt a lot of heat."
About an hour later, Jim Wheeler, driving about four miles east of own, came upon a huge 200-foot, egg-shaped
object sitting in the road, its brilliant glow illuminating the area. As he approached the giant landed UFO, his vehicle
lights and engine suddenly died. Wheeler started to get out, but the massive UFO bolted off into the sky, and as it
did the object's lights went out. At that same moment, Wheeler's car lights came back on!
Around the same time, Newell Wright was driving toward Levelland from the east. All of a sudden his car's ammeter
went crazy, the needle jumping wildly, then the motor died and his lights went out. Puzzled, Wright got out to check
under his hood. He found nothing...but as he turned around HE SAW IT FOR THE FIRST TIME....A LARGE
SAUCER SITTING ON THE ROAD AHEAD...100 FEET LONG, GLOWING BLUISH-GREEN! Scared out of his wits,
Wright jumped back into his car and tried to start it. ERRRRR...ERRRRRR...ERRRRRRR...Nothing! Frightened,
apprehensive and feeling uterly helpless, Wright sat there for several minutes until finally the UFO rose up off the
road and quickly disappeared from sight. Instantly, his car started up without a moment's hesitation.
A few minutes later, Frank Williams encountered a large object on the road about ten miles north of Levelland. His
motor and headlights suddenly went dead, just like the others. Strangely, the glow of the landed UFO pulsed on and
off, steadily, and Williams' headlights pulsed off and on, too, in the exact opposite sequence. So when the UFO
pulsed on, Williams' lights went out, and when the UFO went dark, Williams' lights came to life. Williams trembled
with fear as some un-Earthly force took control of his car. Finally, the saucer took off with a thunderous roar, and
once again Williams' car functioned normally.
In all, at least ten separate witnesses, including Sheriff's Deputies and a fire marshall, reported similar sightings of
giant UFOs and auto malfunctions. All witnesses reported a light, misting rain, but no storms or lightning.
An Air Force Intelligence officer, dispatched to the scene by Air Force Project Blue Book, the USAF's small UFO
investigating group at Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio, spoke with a few witnesses, then later erroneously
claimed lightning had been in the area at the time of the incidents, in spite of all the witness testimony and weather
reports to the contrary.
The Air Force's final evaluation of the Levelland flap attributed the UFO encounters to "weather phenomenon (sic)
of electrical nature, generally classified as 'Ball Lightning' or 'St. Elmo's Fire' " Accordingly, the engine and headlight
failures were caused by "wet electrical circuit," said the Blue Book.
Levelland citizens were outraged by the USAF's ridiculous dismissal of the bizarre UFO encounters and they
passed their anger onto powerful U.S. Senator (D-Tex.) Lyndon Johnson, chairman of the Senate Armed Services
Committee. Fed up with Project Blue Book's public blunders, Johnson, behind the scenes, requested the CIA to
conduct a secret investigation of UFOs without the Air Force finding out. According to information provided in
confidence to the author by the late Dr. Herbert "Pete" Scoville, then director of Scientific Intelligence for the CIA,
and confirmed by Lt. Col. (USAF) Robert Friend, subsequently appointed head of the now power-less Project Blue
Book, with Senator Johnson's support and subsequently that of the National security Council (NSC), the CIA was
granted control UFO intelligence thereafter, largely due to the manner the UFAF's Project Blue Book bungled the
