  In the beginning, there was Betty
and Barney Hill.  During their famed
night drive, something occurred that
would give them a permanent place in
the zeitgeist of ufology.  This article
isn’t about them; however, they mark
the genesis of the public awareness
of a phenomenon that, while still
disbelieved by most, has changed the
world permanently.  I will not go into
the details of their case here seeing
as most of you now reading this
already know of it and if you don’t, it
would be exceedingly easy for you to find that information.  It would be an act of pointless repetition for me to do so.  
However, what I will mention is an aspect of them that most either don’t think of or refuse to mention due to its’
politically incorrect nature.  Barney was an African-American while Betty was Caucasian.  They were a racially mixed
married couple back in the early 1960’s: a time in American history when segregation was still rampant and racist
sentiments were commonplace.  This fact taken in context with their decision to go public with their abduction
experience should cause you to rethink the reasons why they weren’t taken seriously.  
  After the publicizing of their midnight excursion into the murky depths of the unknown came the public reaction
made up of the familiar facets of fear, awe, and disbelief.  Beneath this though, were the unmistakable threads of
longing for something more to quench the thirst for things that challenge the outlook and intoxicate the perception.  
Others who had been through the same as them heard their stories and knew that they were not alone.  Soon after,
others came forward.  Over the years, the number of cases grew into a phenomenal quantity, however it all
remained a footnote that was lost in the noise of human society.  
  Then, in 1987, Whitley Strieber's Communion was published.  This brilliant personal story written by an abductee
that documents his unwilling excursion both into the depths of the rabbit hole and into the depths of his own life and
mind gave the next generation of experiencers the same message from the genesis that they were not alone in their
lot in life.  This brave step helped set in motion a sort of renaissance for abductees and, in turn, my people.  During
this change in the tides of the great western zeitgeist, some bravely began to understand and accept the extent in
which they had been changed by this experience and began to realize that their difference from the rest of the world
was rooted in their genetic structure as well as in their life experience and that there was no possible way that they
were alone.  Even those of us who are ignorant of the genetic inoculation feel the need to find others like ourselves
so that we all may come to understand it.  Knowing that you are an exo-terrestrial is a very hard realization to accept
as its' implications illuminate the fact that nothing we can do can bridge the gap that lies between us and the rest of
humanity.  The best we can hope to do is build a bridge of understanding and abate the loneliness by seeking out
others of our ilk.  For a long time we had no name other than the enigmatic label placed upon us by not the words,
but the actions of our alien proprietors, no place other than our place in their society, and no solidarity of our own.  
The only thing keeping us from being literally nothing here on earth was our quiet yet blatant existence that was
whispered from the darkness and lost in the noise of the crowd that we are dispersed within.  
  In my reading, I’ve come across many of my people who are afraid of being known for fear of violent retaliation
from our unaltered peers toward us based on the state of our existence.  This taken along with the fact that we are
often seen as delusional for our claims causes us to live in secret.  Our existence is a rumor, a whisper, an unheard
truth that is considered but often written off as speculation, delusion, or a joke.  
  If you were to ask an average person off the street what their opinion is on alien abduction, they would most likely
state that they think it is due to a mental disorder or drug use, however you wouldn’t have to explain to them what it
was.  While they aren’t necessarily well informed about it, they know what it is and they would most likely be able to
tell you the gist of what part of an abduction experience entails (at least according to pop culture).  This is due to an
awareness spike that has been driven by fads, television, and most notably, individuals such as Whitley Strieber,
Bud Hopkins, and others who allow themselves to become public figures for the purpose of increasing public
awareness.  However, the public is reluctant to see this as being anything more than a laughable footnote in modern
culture that is born of insanity.  Any evidence to the contrary is quickly dismissed due to the fact that it doesn’t fit
with their internal logic.  They choose to take this mental route of non-acceptance because of their fear of the
unknown.  The possibility that another advanced race has come here and is currently abducting people against
their will and creating hybrids and exo-terrestrials is highly disturbing and shakes the egocentric foundation upon
which many people have foolishly based their self worth.  
  This xenophobic tendency has a double edge.  The other side of this is the level of fascination with the subject.  I’
m sure you all remember how you couldn’t even walk into a gas station without seeing the ball caps, lighters, air
fresheners and other impulse purchase items that were graced with the stereotyped image of the greys (an image
that I'm sure in the future will be seen in the same light that other stereotyped racial images of the past are seen
today).  While many used the commonplace nature of this image and concept as further excuse to discount the
phenomenon as complete stupidity and stayed in the dark, others weren't so blind.  
The sudden popularity of the image was a byproduct of a surge of public interest that helped bring us to where we
are today.   Others outside of our ilk were beginning to accept the possibility of the phenomenon that begat our
existence and this lent strength to many of my people to find the answer behind their mysterious origin that, until
now, was merely felt as an echo from the memories that had been locked out of reach.  Despite this, we remain a
footnote due to our silence and shared feelings of helplessness when it comes to doing anything about our current
situation.  Many of us see too many risks to exposure and feel that we don't have the means.  
There are individuals who have seen this frightened sentiment among my people and filled a niche in giving us a
place to speak about our experiences and even talk of them in a public forum with our anonymity ensured.  Some
are caring researchers who have dedicated themselves to finding an answer to this question while others are not so
caring and only accept stories that support their own pre-existing theories and notions on the subject.  Anyone who
approaches the latter is blocked and accused of having unsubstantiated claims because they don't fit in their own
personal picture of ufology, and not every researchers' picture includes exo-terrestrials.  
There are other specialists and researchers who have stumbled upon our existence and have formed a stereotype
that we are a bunch of super genius psychic wonder-babies sent here by the god-like aliens to save the world and
evolve consciousness here on earth.  The problems that arise from this due to the fact that the ones who
perpetuate this stereotype are automatically placing the extra-terrestrials as betters to the human race and it also
releases us from all responsibility for ourselves, our actions, and the state of our planet.  While this image of my
people seems to be a positive one on the surface, it is an inaccurate one in that it displays us as being something
other than otherwise normal people who are just trying to make a living thus intensifying the chasm that already lies
between us and the rest of humanity.  Not only that, but because this prevalent stereotype releases the rest of
humanity of any responsibility for itself by placing that squarely upon our shoulders, it is an irresponsible  and
dangerous notion that sets my people up to become the scapegoats of any future disaster that humanity brings
upon itself due to our inability to stop it.
  During my long excursions into cyber space,  I’ve come across a darker sentiment that involves deep hatred and
mistrust toward the abductors.   Some people feel that anything, no matter how human, that has been in any way
created or genetically affected by the greys cannot be anything good.  They believe this despite the fact that no one
can choose what they are born as.  They hold this hate blindly and find every justification within themselves to
continue this as they allow it to turn themselves into empty shells, completely un-accepting of the fact that they
themselves could very well be exo-terrestrials.  I’ve read these disturbing sentiments from experiencers and
researchers alike.  Many of my people feel that this alone is more than enough justification to stay in hiding.
   I’ve talked to people who hate them with a passion and would feel perfectly justified in killing them.  I've read very
desperate accounts on message-boards that were posted by people who admit to keeping a loaded gun by their
bed with their abductors names written on it.  I personally know a woman who's abductions ceased after she'd killed
three of her abductors.  In typing this fact and remembering what she told me, I feel a certain sickness in my
stomach as tears threaten to invade my vision.  You may be asking why I, someone who takes the firm stance of
non-violence toward the greys, would associate with someone who had committed such a ghastly act.  I associate
with her because I understand the desperation and inner turmoil that drove her to do this in moments of rage within
their presence.   I remember she once told me that they made hybrids using her that currently reside with them.  
She also expressed that, though she is their mother, they are not her children.  When I asked her why she felt that
way about them, this tall, strong woman with a normally forceful voice turned to me and said the following in a quiet
shaking tone that was barely above a whisper as tears rolled down her face: "They don't know me.  They don't know
me as their mother."  I know that deep down inside she has love for these children and that being kept away from
them has torn her soul in ways that are unimaginable.   
  The reality of my people, our viewpoint, and this entire aspect of our world is wrought by the entire spectrum of
reaction, perception, and emotion.  It is filled with pain and love, fear and fascination, freedom and slavery, hatred
and salvation, betrayal and forgiveness.  It holds within its' vessel the good, the bad, and the ugly.  It's diversity and
very human extremes mark it as a reality that is very much a part of this world despite the fact that it's catalyst is not
of Earth.  However, our existence marks the beginning of change as it shows that our alien proprietors now stand on
the threshold and soon our world won't end where the ionosphere begins.  For many, it already extends far beyond
that boundary.  
  I truly hope that, one day, my people will have a place in this world alongside the rest of humanity that isn't one of
secrecy and isolation.  I truly believe that, if we stand firm, stay strong, and hold to our solidarity as a people, we can
one day be more than a footnote.  I believe that our whispers in the darkness will grow into a scream for redemption
as we reach for more in life than this.  
  I've just now reached the epilogue of Whitley Streibers' Communion.  I came across my paperback copy of this
masterpiece that has had such a profound effect on the exodus of my people before it even began at the bottom of
a cardboard box full of books that my uncle picked up at a garage sale for five dollars.   This was when I was 14,
one year before I began to face my experiences and what they meant for my life and identity.  At age 15, after a
fateful night that wasn't completely erased, I picked the book up but was unable to read it due to how hard it hit
home for me.  I couldn't even look at the image of the grey on the cover without feeling the fear all over again.  My
solution to this problem was to obscure the entire cover using the duct tape that I carried with me everywhere.  I
remember sitting there in algebra class as I ripped perfectly sized strips and, with hands shaking,  covered the
image that I couldn't even stand to look at.  All attempts to read this book were futile since it scared me shit-less.  
Recently, I've dug that now ambiguously covered volume back out and found the strength to read it.  While reading
it I began to seriously ask myself where my people lie within the human socio-political strata.  I soon discovered that
the answer lay right in my lap:  My duct tape bound paperback, it's cover obscured from anyone who might look on
to see what I'm reading so that I can read it safety in anonymity, so the cover image won't disturb me as I pick it up.  
So I don't have to leave it face down in a drawer just so I am able to open said drawer without fear because I know
what image will be staring back up at me.  
  I believed that I was ready to face the image and I proceeded to lift one of the strips of duct tape off of the paper it
protected me from.  I found that, after 6 years of being covered, the adhesive had bonded with the paper so tightly
that, if I were to pull it off, it would take the image with it.  The only way to keep this image intact at this point is to
keep it hidden.  It shouldn't be this way and I vow to change that.  I vow it with every fiber of my being.
